The Boulogne Sheep

A 26' documentary directed in 2000 by Dominique Martin-Ferrari, Jérôme Tubiana

In the past the Boulogne sheep breed was widespread over the Nord Pas-de-Calais and the Somme regions, representing all the qualities required for the sheep trials: alertness and large size…

From the 50s onwards it fell victim to a radical change in the breeding system and the evolution of the meat market which became centralised, leading to the disappearance of the breed.
Whereas in 1929 there were one hundred and seventy thousand heads, in 1982, research on local races carried out through press advertising came up with 900 animals shared among twenty-three breeders who know each other and exchange breeding animals. The association is planning to relaunch the race scientifically: selection, promotion, breeding contracts.
In 1992, for the first time in a long while, animals returned to the Agriculture Fair competition in Paris.

Today, producers are working on the setting up of a quality label "Boulogne lamb".
